About Us and Our Approach
About Us
Our History in Brief
AIGHD was founded in 2009 by a team of passionate scientists led by Prof. Joep Lange. Together with our sibling organization, PharmAccess Foundation, we provide expertise in innovative research, project implementation, and community development through a variety of programmes and projects.
Our impact as AIGHD lies in our unique interdisciplinary approach in studying and implementing research related to health and wellbeing. This includes studying climate change, genetic epidemiology, and various other fields which impact health.
A Renewed Strategic Outlook and Approach to Global Health
Our strategy is to operate as a community or network organisation, directly employing a small group of scientists to bridge with the faculties and across disciplines, and who are working on specific projects, linked to a wider group of faculty-based academics. AIGHD moves beyond a typical scientific network organisation by providing a combination of services to its academics (Fellows) to generate ideas, attract funding and manage large projects (particularly those that are internationally funded), create new relationships with global partners, design and implement cross disciplinary research and education, attract international students, and engage with global health policy institutions.
We provide support for researchers across a variety of fields and needs which enable excellent research in global health.
Given the diversity of academics across the universities of Amsterdam, AIGHD does not have a pre-specified research programme, but provides a set of research, policy support services, and teaching opportunities that enable excellent researchers and educators based in the universities of Amsterdam to participate in and enhance their careers in global health. Our operating approach is rooted in enabling researchers, educators, and Fellows maximise their personal potential by:
Placement in a community that strives at increasing impact of health research.
Providing the means for high quality research project delivery in both The Netherlands and overseas.
Access to additional sources of international and domestic funding
Active mentoring and skills enhancement to support career progression.
Expanding horizons, ideas and methods through networking and linkage with diverse scientific disciplines, international partners, and funders
