Renewed vision & mission

Equal Opportunities for Health for All

– AIGHD's vision

We achieve our vision through the development of knowledge in key mission areas.

Generating knowledge

We conduct cross-disciplinary, socially impactful, and innovative research in equitable partnerships to help address health inequities worldwide.

  • We advance the development and implementation of new health technologies to address communicable and non-communicable diseases by understanding and evaluating health, social, and poverty impacts in different contexts.
  • We contribute to the sustainable improvement of global health through understanding and identifying solutions to address threats to sustainable health systems, such as climate change, antimicrobial resistance, and pandemic diseases.
  • We advance the delivery of health services through informing and supporting legitimate and value-based health sector governance, financing, and decision-making.

We contribute to communities of learning by strengthening the global health research expertise of future generations.

  • We improve knowledge and expertise in global health research methods and global health governance, policy, and economics by providing master’s courses.
  • We strengthen the capacity and enhance the careers of global health researchers at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
  • We improve awareness of global health inequity for those studying at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Vrije Universiteit (VU) by providing opportunities for research internships, for instance.
  • We enable those working in low- and middle-income countries to access the educational offerings of the UvA and VU and provide capacity strengthening in global health research in collaboration with our global research partners.

Sharing knowledge

Applying knowledge

We turn research evidence into policy and practice insights to use in advocating for global health improvement.

  • We achieve substantial global health impact by informing and influencing policymakers across national (e.g., the Dutch government) and global (e.g. WHO, UN agencies, and European Commission) lines.
  • We engage communities and the public around the world, advocating for individual and community action to redress inequities in global health.
  • We challenge the info-demic of misinformation in global health by contributing to public and social discussion and debate.
  • We seek to redress colonial advantage in global health research through understanding our position, striving to rebalance inequities with partners and communities, and respecting different knowledge bases.
