Summary of the Report
A Year of Change
At the Amsterdam Institute of Global Health and Development, 2023 was marked as a year full of changes from our new Executive Board assuming their roles, our expanding Fellows network, and new frontiers in global health such as climate change, digital health, and broader interdisciplinary research becoming more integrated into our work.
Our Fellows Network
With more than 150 Fellows within our research network, AIGHD brings together innovative and talented researchers to produce high-quality and impactful transdisciplinary research.
Our Professional Staff
Meet our teams for Project Management and Operations, working diligently towards an equitable future in global health.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We want our organization to reflect our values. Read up on our commitments to DEI on our website.
Our Scientific Work
We work across disciplines, fields, and cultures to ensure that the knowledge we produce is impactful and high-quality. This year, we have new thematic areas which we are confident will define the global health sector for the upcoming decade.
Antimicrobial Resistance
The World Health Organization declared Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) to be one of the world's top 10 health threats. Bacterial diseases are becoming increasingly difficult to treat because of the misuse and overuse of antibiotics to treat people and animals. AIGHD hosts the AMR-Global platform, a public-private partnership built solely to address this health threat.
Digital Health
The world is more connected than ever but public health is not fully utilizing its potential. We want to change that by developing more nuanced and accessible digital health systems which enable public health practitioners to respond to outbreaks using more accurate data and information.
Climate and Health
AIGHD is now bridging the gap between climate and health by bringing new perspectives to climate research. Our first major foray into the field, the SPRINGS project aims to understand the complex relationship between water-borne diarrhoeal disease and climate change.
Education and Advocacy
As a research institution, we help build Communities of Learning across all stages of research from the Bachelor's level to Postdoctoral research, empowering the next generation of educators and scientists to work towards tangible impact.
Shaping the Dutch and EU Global Health Strategy
We contribute to national and regional global health strategies through the newly established Dutch Global Health Hub and the Knowledge Institutes Network, the latter of which has its secretariat based at AIGHD.
Global Health Education
In 2023, we restarted our Global Health in Context: Sri Lanka programme. Hosted in partnership with the University of Ruhuna, our 2023 cohort learned many
Communities of Learning
We've spent many years establishing and developing relationships with relevant stakeholders and practitioners. The INTEREST Conference, INTERACT, and the Joep Lange Symposium reflect our capacity to influence Global Health through our network.
